You may have heard about stem cell research in the news or elsewhere, but it is exceptionally beneficial for treating numerous conditions, injuries, and diseases! If you have been unable to find effective relief from a condition, damage, or illness, we encourage you to consider stem cell therapy. At Genesis MD, our medical professionals are fully educated and qualified to provide expert stem cell therapy.

What is stem cell therapy and how does it work?

Stem cell therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that helps repair diseased, damaged, or otherwise dysfunctional tissue using individual human cells that can develop into a variety of different cell types. In a lot of ways, stem cells function as your body’s raw material because, from them, all cells with specialized functions grow and develop. Stem cells repeatedly divide to produce new cells that transform into different cells that make up your bodily composition. Under the proper guidance, stem cells can be developed into specific tissue to replace or regenerate cells that have begun to deteriorate from disease, age, or overuse.  In this way, they help initiate and speed up the healing process and can help rebuild damaged muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

As for the actual stem cell injection, your doctor will either take stem cells from your blood, bone marrow, or fat, or that from a matching donor. The harvesting process will depend on where the stem cells are coming from and what conditions are being treated. For a blood-based condition, they will be taken from your blood and reprocessed. For conditions such as osteoarthritis or tendonitis, the treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic. The doctor will then make a small incision to harvest the stem cells from your bone marrow or fat through a needle. While this sounds invasive, the anesthetic will make it so that you don’t feel a thing! After the stem cells have been harvested and processed, they will be injected into the treatment area. The entire procedure takes about one to two hours. Both recovery time and pain should be minimal, and you should be able to return to work the next day. It is also advised that you have someone to drive you home after therapy is complete.

What can stem cell therapy treat?

Stem cell therapy can provide lasting and effective treatment for a wide range of diseases, injuries, and genetic conditions! Examples of what stem cell therapy can treat include the following:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Cartilage, ligament, or tendon injuries
  • Certain cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and neuroblastoma
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Heart disease
  • Huntingdon’s disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Macular degeneration
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Plantar fascitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Severe burns
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke
  • Type 1 diabetes

If you have any of the above conditions, diseases, or injuries, and have been unable to find relief through effective treatment, stem cell therapy could be of great benefit to you! Of course, before you are cleared for stem cell therapy, the doctor conducting your treatment will want to ensure that stem cell therapy is appropriate for you and that you will not experience any adverse effects from treatment. As such, your doctor will evaluate your physical condition, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking during an initial consultation to make sure that you will adequately benefit from stem cell therapy.

How long do stem cell injections last?

After the procedure, the injected stem cells will continue to form new cells and repair the targeted area for up to one year. That said, patients can expect to experience relief within a couple of weeks of the treatment. The length of time that the stem cells will last vary for each individual and their particular conditions. As such, stem cell injections can last anywhere from five months to three years. Often, physical therapy is an excellent supplement to maintain positive results from stem cell therapy.
