WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes pulsed acoustic waves to treat various musculoskeletal conditions involving chronic pain, as well as orthopedics, sports medicine, urology, and veterinary medicine. Studies have shown that shockwave therapy has extraordinary efficacy in relieving chronic pain from musculoskeletal conditions, including tendinopathies. ESWT is one of the phenomenal services that we offer at Genesis MD! Our doctors are expertly trained in pain management techniques and have extensive experience to show for it!
HOW DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY WORK?
With extracorporeal shockwave therapy, a trained medical professional delivers pulsed acoustic waves to targeted areas where musculoskeletal tissues are afflicted with various chronic conditions. The energy produced by these waves promotes and accelerates healing and regeneration in the bones, tendons, and other musculoskeletal tissues. ESWT reverses chronic inflammation, improves blood flow, and stimulates collagen production, which is the most crucial protein in the healing and regenerative process. As such, the stimulated collagen production repairs and regenerates bone tissue, tendon fibers, and ligament structures to heal chronic conditions.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS
The first step in the process of extracorporeal shockwave therapy involves an initial consultation with a doctor to discuss your medical history, any medications you are currently taking, which chronic conditions you are seeking treatment for, what you hope to achieve with ESWT, and answer any questions you have about treatment. Your doctor will also examine the areas in which your chronic condition has affected. With this information, your doctor will determine your fitness for ESWT and establish a treatment plan for you.
If the doctor believes that you can receive extracorporeal shockwave therapy without any undue risks, you will proceed to the next step, which involves the actual treatment. Before the doctor applies the ESWT device, they will spread a gel over the treatment area, which will enable the shock waves to pass through the layers of skin. Sessions should not take longer than five to ten minutes and are usually performed once a week over a three- to six-week period. After each session, tenderness and discomfort are minimal. You should be able to return to your daily activities without any complications. Gradual healing will occur over the next days, weeks, and months of treatment, and you can expect complete healing within one year of treatment.
WHAT CONDITIONS DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY OFFFER?
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy has shown exceptional efficacy in healing or improving the following conditions:
- Achilles, elbow, patellar, and shoulder tendinopathy
- Cervical and lumbar spine pain
- Femoral head necrosis
- Iliotibial band friction syndrome
- Medial tibial stress syndrome
