Whether you have injured yourself from participating in sports, manual labor, or from overuse, or if you have chronic pain, it is crucial that you find the right treatment so that your body can heal properly. Sometimes injuries might seem minor or that you can continue despite the pain, but doing so can compound your condition and cause it to worsen. One of the excellent treatment options that we offer is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy! Our doctors are fully trained and certified to provide this innovative and efficient treatment for several different issues. You can rest assured that our staff will treat you with respect, kindness, and dignity!
What is platelet-rich plasma therapy and what does it do?
Platelet-rich plasma is derived from your blood, which is placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from the red and white blood cells during therapy. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood, composed mostly of water and proteins. It functions as the medium by which red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets circulate through the body. Platelets are blood cells that are an essential element in your body’s healing processes.
In the first step of platelet-rich plasma therapy, blood is taken from the patient’s arm and put into a vial. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from the rest of the blood. Once the platelets are activated, the platelet-rich plasma is injected into the diseased, damaged, or dysfunctional tissue. Depending on where the injection needs to go, ultrasound imagery may be used to ensure the PRP injection goes to the right area. Once the PRP is injected into the tissue, the activated platelets release numerous growth factors that stimulate the production of reparative cells to help your body heal.
